Identifying Pulse and Meters

Using rhythms musically and in analysis of songs

improvising on odd rhythms and meters

Rhythmic transcriptions of songs

Pre-requisites –

Age 12 + 2+ years in playing an instrument or vocals

Course Syllabus

FUNDAMENTALS
  • Quality of time and how it affects music
  • Understanding the concept of meters in music
  • Going through the subdivision ladder with a twist of going beyond the conventional system.
  • Identifying pulses
IDENTIFYING METERS
  • Understanding how phrasing works as building blocks for larger compositions
  • Using pulse to identify odd meters.
  • Understanding the nature of songs in different time signatures.
  • Composing basic song structures using the different ideas of phrasing in even meters.
TRANSCRIPTION
  • Understanding the logic of composition in songs with odd meters
  • Breaking down songs into smaller fragments.
  • Transcribing complex rhythms in simple songs.
  • Using the above concepts to write a tune from scratch.
MICRO & MACRO RHYTHM
  • Understanding the difference between MICRO and MACRO RHYTHM
  • Introduction to tuplets and Nested tuplets
  • Mixing micro and macro Rhythms to better aid us in composition
  • Introduction to polyrhythm and polymeters
